SASLI’s 25th anniversary conference is getting nearer and nearer, with just seven days left until the big event, to be held in Edinburgh on 5th and 6th October.

We are delighted that Hilary Third from the Scottish Government will be presenting our first Honorary Award, as well as giving certificates to our newly registered BSL/English interpreters, on the morning of Friday 5th October.

We are also very pleased to unveil our great new logo, which was designed by Richard Addison. You can see it at the top of this press release and on our conference blog, at http://www.sasli25.com. The logo will be added on all our merchandise at the conference; 2008 diaries, mouse mats and mugs, as well as to our business cards.

By now, anyone who has booked a place at the conference should have received their tickets. If you have booked a place and haven’t heard anything from us, please do contact our office as soon as you can.

Finally, our final conference programme is now available, and can be seen at
http://sasli25.com/programme/. We look forward to seeing you in Edinburgh!

Photographs of SASLI members over the last 25 years would be gratefully received for our Interpreting – 25 Years of Evolution conference in October.

Shots can be of you, your work colleagues or members of the Deaf community, and can have been taken at any time between 1981 and 2007. We want them to show a variety of interpreting assignments and international conferences – in fact, we’d love to see anything portraying SASLI members!

They will be used for the special 25-year edition of our Annual Report, as well as for a slide show, which will be given during the evening meal after the conference on Friday 5th October 2007.

So, if you have any old photos that you’d like to share with other SASLI members, please do let us have them by 31st July!

If you can help, we would be grateful if you could please contact Geraldine O’Neill on 0141 202 0791, post your photos to the SASLI office at the address below, or pop in and drop them off.

You will be given a photo consent form to say you give permission for SASLI to use the photos. All original photos will be scanned and returned to their owners in August.

Our exciting conference programme is now online in full for you to download and print out - you can see it here.

If you haven’t booked a place yet, what are you waiting for?  The deadline for bookings has been extended from 1st July to 1st August.  Click here to book today!

SASLI is delighted to confirm that the programme for the Interpreting – 25 Years of Evolution conference in October 2007 is almost ready.

A rich variety of speakers – SASLI members and non-members, both Deaf and hearing – will be covering a wide range of topics. In line with our conference theme, many papers will look at how BSL/English interpreting has evolved in the last 25 years.

The main conference papers will focus on the development of the interpreting profession, engaging with the Deaf Community and future routes to the interpreting profession.

A series of workshops will also be held each day, covering ethics and well-being, improving access to public services, team interpreting, historical and future perspectives, development of Deaf interpreters, and maintaining quality standards in BSL/English interpreting.

It’s not too late to submit a paper for SASLI’s Interpreting – 25 Years of Evolution conference, to be held in Edinburgh on 5th and 6th October 2007.

The deadline for submitting abstracts has been extended to 25th May, so if you are interested, please email your abstract (no more than 200 words) to Helga McGilp at helga@sasli.org.uk.

Various stakeholders will be giving papers on interpreting, but we would like more presentations about interpreters – it would be great if SASLI members could do this.  We would also welcome more papers presented by Deaf people.

Please note that not all presentations will be 75 minutes long. There will also be workshops, which may take 30 minutes including time for questions.  People are also welcome to submit proposals for joint presentations, with two people presenting for 15 minutes each, or three people each presenting for 10 minutes.

˜    Consumer perspectives on sign language interpreting
˜    Evolving ethics within the sign language interpreting profession
˜    Perspectives from other language professions
